TAXI
Black cabs are the official London taxis: they can be hailed on the street or can be found at the special parking lots located in the most important points of the city such as the main railway lines and the underground and bus stops. It is also possible to book them by telephone.
If the yellow light is on, it means that the taxi is free. Black cabs are required by law to accept all rides of 12 miles or less (20 miles for those serving at Heathrow airport), or one hour in duration.
Rates and advice
Fares are calculated with a taximeter, starting from a minimum of 2.40 pounds. Additional charges apply for travel from Heathrow, telephone bookings, and over Christmas and New Years. Although most black cabs accept credit or debit card payments (there is an additional cost), we still recommend asking the driver before departure.
For more information, visit Transport for London’s section on taxi fares.
The tip to be given to the taxi driver is usually around 10% of the cost of the ride, although most passengers round up to the pound.
Access to black cabs: passengers with disabilities or reduced mobility
All black cabs are wheelchair accessible, and carry assistance dogs free of charge. Most taxis have a number of additional passenger services, including:
Ramps
Swivel seats
Climbing steps
Large and colored internal grab handles
Seats with visual warning (for passengers with reduced visibility)
Intercom
Magnetic induction amplification system
Private taxis
Private taxi services include a wide range of vehicles, from traditional minicabs to chauffeured limousines.
Minicabs and other private taxis must be booked in the appropriate offices, by phone or by email.
