Sudan is sliding towards genocide.
The news doesn’t talk about it, but Sudan is sliding towards genocide.
In recent weeks, thousands of people have been massacred in over 27 cities. The death patrol goes door to door leaving behind murdered families, decomposing bodies in the streets and mass graves visible from satellite images. There is evidence that child soldiers are being recruited and killed.
Some are already calling it genocide. But journalists are hounded or barred from entering the country, and mass atrocities don’t appear in the news, and the world does virtually nothing.
Over 300,000 people died in the genocide in Darfur 20 years ago. We can’t let this happen again. Here’s what we can do.
Avaaz has identified a “sleeper network" of Sudanese journalists ready to work on the front lines. They can bring hidden horrors to light, but they need funding to prepare to operate in a real war zone. We can support their work, and that of photographers and fact-checkers, as well as apply political pressure to break the silence.
It is not about “making a donation", but about financing actions to prevent genocide. Together we can amplify Sudan’s silent cry, shaking world leaders before it is too late.
The severity of the Sudan crisis is staggering, but by pooling our donations we can exert tremendous influence on world leaders to take action. By doing so, we will set in motion something much bigger than we could do alone: billions in life-saving aid, urgent peacekeeping missions, and sanctions on weapons of mass destruction.
Many of Avaaz’s campaigns fight the very things that are tearing Sudan apart: hate speech and misinformation on social media, global inequality, and the accelerating climate crisis. So, in addition to funding concrete actions to prevent genocide, your donation will also fuel Avaaz’s campaigns for human rights and democracy. If we collect enough we will be able to:
Fund independent journalists who document the facts with photos, videos and first-hand accounts of what is happening in Darfur and across Sudan;
Support news fact-checking organisations, counter disinformation and enable international coverage of mass atrocities;
Strengthen awareness-raising and incisive media campaigns to urge political action on the looming genocide and more generally on the civil war; And
Create a specialized human rights team to monitor emerging threats and mobilize millions of people across the planet to defend democracy and our fundamental rights.
When acts of chilling violence remain hidden, warlords win by keeping their crimes shielded from international judgment and action. But when they are revealed, the survivors have a chance for justice and peace. We have already proudly supported war journalists, from Syria to Yemen to Ukraine, and we can help break the silence again, this time in Sudan. We really want to be able to say: never again.
