Jacques and Savin Couelle
This brilliant copy of father and son, both artist and architect, played a crucial role in the development of the architectural style of the Costa Smeralda. In fact they produced a true masterpiece of art, which has become famous all over the world: the Hotel Cala di Volpe, which appears outside an ancient Mediterranean fishing village, while inside it is a modern creation of a surreal architecture , which involves and stimulates the spirit of every visitor who enters it.
The eccentric artist Jacques Couelle, who was a friend of Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalì, was awarded the Légion d’Honeur at the French Academy for his artistic merits.
Brought to the Costa Smeralda by Aga Khan, Jacques chose for his home the fortress overlooking the Abbiadori and the Cala di Volpe bay, where he built his palace carved in the rock. After a long and brilliant career, he disappeared at the age of 95.
Savin Couelle of no less inferior artistic talent than his father, continued to work in the Costa Smeralda, with a prolific production of fascinating villas, to the point that it has become a myth among the affectionate “Couelle". Many potential home buyers enter real estate agencies in Porto Cervo asking only for a “Villa Couelle".
Savin’s houses are full of curves, vaulted ceilings, twisted juniper beams, peculiar niches and many elaborate details, built by choosing excellent local craftsmen and using special rare materials.
The result is an architectural sculpture, perhaps a precursor of future styles, so much so that it has been very copied by qualified people and often by unqualified imitators, with various degrees of success.
In addition to the Hotel Cala di Volpe, Savin Couelle designed the “Maison du Port" in the Old Port of Porto Cervo and the nearby apartments of “La Capitaneria", the complexes “Cala Corallina" and “Poggio di Cala Granu", the villas of “Petramanna" and many other splendid villas scattered here and there in the Costa Smeralda.
Appreciating the hospitality and friendship established with the Sardinian people, Savin donated his professional talent to the creation of the Carmelite convent of Nuoro, adding another Couelle masterpiece to the embellishment of the Sardinian landscape.
He has often been called to various parts of the world to design important palaces for princes and tycoons, where he has always brought his team of talented Sardinian craftsmen, who are the only ones who can interpret his desires and satisfy his demanding requests. of precision in the artistic details he created.
Anna Wakhevitch-Corsy wrote:
“Savin Couëlle’s style is not only an image that makes you dream, it is also the mastery of techniques, the mastery of materials. Correspondence between interior and exterior, rationality of space and the ability to give a sense of grandeur to even the smallest spaces. L importance for detail and the whole construction rests on a brilliant balance. This too is an expression of his style. “
