Castello di Pedres
The Pedres Castle, or Castello di Pedres, is a medieval fortress located about 10 km south of Olbia, Sardinia. Built around the 13th century, it served as a strategic stronghold during the conflicts between the Giudicati (Judgeships) of Gallura and Arborea, Sardinian kingdoms of the time. The castle was strategically positioned on a hill, giving it a panoramic view over the surrounding valley, which allowed its occupants to monitor the coastline and defend against potential invaders. Over the centuries, it fell into disuse and is now partially in ruins, though some of its walls and towers remain intact, offering a glimpse into its storied past.
Ownership of the castle has changed over time, reflecting Sardinia’s tumultuous history of shifting rule between local rulers and foreign powers. Today, Pedres Castle is managed as a historical site, open to visitors interested in Sardinia’s medieval heritage.
The castle is accessible via a short hike up the hill, suitable for most fitness levels. The ascent rewards visitors with views of both Olbia and the surrounding countryside. There’s no entry fee to visit the castle grounds, making it a great option for a budget-friendly day trip. Guided tours are not always available on-site, so it may be helpful to research or inquire with local tour providers in Olbia if a guided experience is desired. The castle is best visited during daylight hours and pairs well with a visit to the nearby Giant’s Tomb of Su Monte de s’Ape, creating a complete historical excursion.
